When Murnau's ‘Faust - A German Folk Tale’ premiered at the UFA-Palast am Zoo in Berlin in 1926, the director was already in Hollywood for the filming of ‘Sunrise’. Murnau's last German film draws on older versions of the Faust saga as well as Goethe's classic version. The Lord of Darkness Mephisto has made a bet with the archangel Michael that he can corrupt the soul of the old Faust and destroy the divine in him. If he succeeds, the devil will gain dominion over the earth...

The silent film about Faust's temptation is set to music by the renowned British jazz trumpeter Tom Arthurs, who heads the Jazz and Contemporary Music Department at the HKB. He is collaborating with the Italian sound artist Marta Zapparoli and the Swiss drummer Michael Cina. Before the performance, there will be a talk with the bank manager and Goethe expert Dr Josef Ackermann at 7 pm.
