Even Fritz Lang's Metropolis, probably the most famous silent film of all time, had only survived in fragmentary form until a few years ago. When an additional 25 minutes of film were found in Buenos Aires in 2008, it was rightly considered a sensation, even though it was “only” a poorly preserved 16mm copy. What is virtually unknown is the fact that not only is the vast majority of silent film heritage lost forever, but that countless films have been preserved only in fragments. This includes films by renowned directors. We are showing three such fragments of films by the never sufficiently praised Tod Browning, Musidora, who drove the Surrealists into ecstasy, and Daisuke Itô, who was central to the development of the samurai film.

The film fragments are set to music by Ephemeral Fragments, the improvisational trio featuring Florian Walter on tubax, Emily Wittbrodt on cello and Korhan Erel on electronics. Their music is characterised by an enormous density of textures and depth of sound, without straying too far from a solid sense of control and reduction: ‘With atmospheric density, a lot is brewing in hybrid colour mixtures, subtle nuances of sound and melodic remnants between restlessness and contemplation, accompanied by a good dose of melancholy.’ (neue musikzeitung)
