Albert Cirera (Tenor Saxophone), Olie Brice (Double Bass)

De Nederlandsche Filmliga

Overcoming natural obstacles is an integral part of everyday life in the Netherlands. Dams, dykes and canals, man-made constructions, are in symbiosis with nature. The absolute film by Joris Ivens is a study of the pure gaze and dynamic editing, Andor von Barsky's films play with the form of the city symphony and the originally scientifically conceived study by Jan Cornelis Mol finally takes the film completely into the realm of abstraction.

The four films are set to music by the Spanish saxophonist Albert Cirera and the English double bassist Olie Brice. Cirera's playing is a sound sculpture in constant transformation. As if he were a sculptor of the ethereal, he moulds each sound with different techniques and instruments as if it were matter. Olie Brice, on the other hand, makes the whole body of his bass sing. He has the ability to play a fractal line that is as focussed as that of the great jazz bassists, but within a completely abstract framework.
