Three Gems of Experimental Silent Film

Over the past ten years, the Misterioso Jazz Club has transformed itself from an insider tip into an institution that radiates far beyond the Zurich music scene. The programme offers space for contemporary sound explorations created out of the moment that question listening habits. The transient art of improvisation is to be given a hearing with music that transcends borders and goes beyond the mainstream, with links to film in particular coming to the fore in the programme. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Misterioso Jazz Club, together with the IOIC - Institute of Incoherent Cinematography and the Filmpodium, invites you to discover (or rediscover) three newly restored gems of experimental silent film.

The programme includes Dimitri Kirsanoff's "Ménilmontant", a tragic story about two orphans that pulls out all the avant-garde stops, Germaine Dulac's "La Coquille et le clergyman", which symbolically explores the effects of conformity and authority on society and infuriated the male surrealists, and finally the anti-fascist masterpiece "Europa" by the two Polish surrealists Franciszka and Stefan Themerson, rediscovered only last year, which, based on Anatol Stern's futurist poem of the same name, conjures up a Europe on the brink of the abyss.

The films are set to music by three outstanding musicians who are teaming up for the first time for this evening: The Zurich singers and live electronic musicians Iokoi (aka Mara Miccichè) and Víz (aka Réka Csiszér) and the Brazilian bassist Carla Boregas, a key figure in the alternative music scene in São Paulo.
