Arovane sets Murnau’s FAUST to Music

Convinced of the human soul’s susceptibility to corruption, the evil spirit Mephisto makes a wager with the Archangel Gabriel that he will wrest the soul of the elderly scholar Faust from God. Powerless and desperate, Faust is forced to watch his fellow citizens die of the plague and surrenders himself to the tempter Mephisto, who grants him youth, wealth and power. In return, Faust renounces God and His heavenly hosts, whereupon he becomes increasingly reckless and a downward spiral begins that ends only in death. In his adaptation of the Faust story, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau draws on elements from the *Historia von Doktor Johann Fausten* as well as from Marlowe’s and Goethe’s plays, giving the story a new and thoroughly original twist. Entangled in the metaphysical struggle between good and evil, between light and shadow, there is only one means by which humanity can emerge from the religious Middle Ages into the bright modern age: love.

With his three albums *Atol Scrap* (1999), *Tides* (2000) and *Lilies* (2004), Arovane has secured a firm place amongst the pantheon of ambient music greats. Unlike many of his experimental peers from the early 2000s, who favoured shrill, algorithmic abstractions, he is celebrated above all for his intellectual, atmospheric and deeply human melodies. His music, underpinned by highly structured, complex rhythms and characterised by hip-hop, breakbeat and glitch textures, evokes a powerful sense of longing – a bittersweet, cinematic nostalgia – whilst he often weaves together synthesiser pads with contemplative keyboard loops that transport the listener into childlike or dreamlike states. Having provided the soundtrack for the scandalous silent film *Salomé* as part of an IOIC silent film marathon in 2015, he now returns to Zurich with a new live score for Murnau’s *Faust*.
