‘The Mystic’ is a fantastically atmospheric but rarely seen film in Tod Browning's artistic development, set in his favoured milieu of dodgy sideshows and clever petty criminals, and bringing his fascination with the uncanny and his subversive moral ambiguity to full effect. And it provides an impressive platform for silent film diva Aileen Pringle, who, in her role as fake clairvoyant Zara, swindles American high society under the guidance of a Svengali-like accomplice - and reviews a whole series of unforgettable outfits by art deco designer Erté in the process.

The film is scored by Linda and Lukas Vogel. Hardly any other classical instrument is as clichéd as the harp: It is supposed to sound sensual, harmonious, fragile, even ethereal. Linda Vogel shows that the harp can also produce completely different sounds. Together with her brother Lukas, she now takes a much more powerful, darker, more industrial approach. Using synthesisers and effect devices, electronic and acoustic, machine and organic, strings and oscillators merge - always carried by a third instrument: Linda Vogel's voice, dark, repetitive, hypnotic.
