The Cinematographic South Pole

The extraordinary, heart-wrenching official account of Captain Scott's legendary final expedition to the South Pole has been fully restored by the BFI National Archive and the film's sophisticated colour scheme has been reinstated. The alien beauty of the landscape is dramatically brought to life, revealing the world of the expedition in brilliant detail. After the tragic outcome of the Antarctic expedition, cameraman Herbert G. Ponting dedicated the rest of his life to ensuring that the magnificence of the Antarctic and the heroism of the expedition would not be forgotten. The images he captured have fuelled the imagination of countless adventurers ever since.

The visually stunning documentary film is set to music by Tout Bleu, the Geneva trio led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Simone Aubert with Luciano Turella on viola, Beatriz Raimundo on cello and live electronic musician POL. Here, haunting string instruments, stuttering beats and operatic vocals come together in pastoral darkwave garb. It sounds a bit like Nico jamming with the electro-acoustic shoegazers Disco Inferno.
