‘Ujmuri is one of the first Soviet feature films to be directed by a woman. Expressive contrast montages, visual compositions and strong characters characterise the narrative, which deals with the collision between tradition and modernity, more specifically with swamp drainage in the Samegrelo region. Local folk beliefs meet Soviet modernisation. The title of the film is a goddess who, according to legend, lives in the swamps and resists intruders. The ban on the film after its premiere immediately put an end to Nuza Gogoberidze's career as a director. Another force of nature - a glacier at an altitude of over 4000 metres - gave Nuza Gogoberidze's first solo directorial work its title: Buba, a ‘cultural film’ from 1930. The hopeful project of a technologised future is contrasted with the hard everyday life and work of the people in the high mountain region of Racha. Amidst the depiction of existential hardship and the ideological framing, the humour that pervades the film is striking.’ (Gaby Babić & Barbara Wurm)

The two Georgian films will be set to music by a new improvisation quartet that Romane Bouffioux, a percussionist from western Switzerland, has created especially for this evening. Together with vocal artist Natalie Peters, clarinettist Rebecca Minten and flautist Marina Tantanozi, she will attempt to musically counter the unleashed visual language.
