Georges Méliès' early films, such as the fairy tale “Le Royaume des fées”, coloured by hand frame by frame, are a unique baroque visual spectacle in which the French grand master of early cinema reaches the peak of his imagination. ‘Le Voyage à travers l'impossible’, on the other hand, is a parody of the scientific travel literature of the time, in which a geographical society with the eloquent name “Institut de géographie incohérente” embarks on a journey around the world that is to surpass all previous expeditions of the learned world in terms of imagination and fantasy.
The 120-year-old films are set to music by the American sound and performance artist, instrument maker and composer Kristina Warren, who uses contemporary audio tools of her own design to create elaborate orchestrations that are both precise and unpredictable and have also been described as a combination of the synthetic and the profoundly human.
The live score will be followed by a concert by Argentinian sound artist QOA.
