Satoko Fujii Quartet, Satoko Fujii (Piano), Natsuki Tamura (Trumpet), Takeharu Hayakawa (Bass), Tatsuya Yoshida (Drums)

Roxy Hart is sexy, jazz-loving and dressed to kill. She has a doting, handsome husband and a gold-digging affair on the side, who pays and pays, eventually with his life. Put on trial for murder, Roxie secures a lawyer, equal part mob mouthpiece and publicity agent. When Roxie hits the headlines, the courtroom theatrics begin. This satiric tale of sex and murder is an entertaining mix of humour and melodrama as well as a pungent critique of trash journalism. Even though Frank Urson signed as director, it is substantially the work of Cecil B. DeMille who apparently judged it unseemly to take full credit for this cynical and secular story while his religious spectacle THE KING OF KINGS was still in theatres.
The film is set to music by the Satoko Fujii Quartet with Satoko Fujii on piano, Natsuki Tamura on trumpet, Takemura Hayakawa on electric bass and Tatsuya Yoshida on drums. The quartet reunited last year after a break of 15 years and met with an enthusiastic response: “The rhythm section drives the music forward at breakneck speed, giving it sometimes a more rockish than boppish feel, or something in between. Fujii's compositions are wonderfully complex, with rhythm and tempo changes, long unison lines and brilliantly tight arrangements. Both Fujii and Tamura are in excellent form too. This is music that has a very free feel, but the discipline and mastery of the four musicians shows itself best in the transition between the improvised and arranged moments.”
