Appearing in pulp magazines in 1919, the character of the masked vigilante Zorro (Spanish for "fox") laid the foundation for the superhero genre. Like Batman later, Zorro has a dual identity; without his mask he plays the simple-minded Don Diego de la Vega, but in his costume he is Zorro, the gallant defender of the oppressed.
