Music in Silent Film

Having lost both hands in a train accident, concert pianist Paul Orlac is transplanted the hands of an executed murderer but realises that he‘s unable to control them.  He descends ever deeper into a maelstrom of self-doubt and panic. When his hostile father is murdered and suspicion falls on him, things begin to take an unpredictable course… Among the first to address the fears of transplantation in this late expressionist silent film, director Robert Wienes subtly and masterfully combines elements of the science fiction, crime and horror genres.

The live music performance brings together Dominik Blum on the Hammond organ and Marino Pliakas on e-bass, both known from Steamboat Switzerland, with drummer Michael Wertmüller. Passionately dedicated to the boundaries between Rock, improvisation and New Music since 1996, Steamboat Switzerland have by now become an institution. Wertmüller is drummer with the Full Blast formation around saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, where Pliakas plays, too. And he has already received four composition requests by Steamboat Switzerland. Here are three musicians who know each other closely.
