Film in Silent Film

Villa Sträuli, Winterthur

The 2013/2014 season is given over to the arts within silent film.  For its second guest series at Villa Sträuli, IOIC has selected six early films dealing with the medium of film in various ways. Cameras began turning toward themselves early on, unleashing a chain reaction of self-reflections.  The play of the film within the film entered nearly all the genres, from comedy to tragedy to documentary, all of them taking account of the fact that, slowly but surely, the act of filming was becoming an integral part of reality.

Experiments in Cinematographic Communication

The series on film within silent film opens with a classic of Russian provenance, Dziga Vertov’s “Man with a Movie Camera”. In search of the absolute cinematographic language, this half experimental, half documentary hybrid dispenses with intertitles and with any allusions to theatre or literature. Only the excerpts from the cameraman’s diary are meant to be shown in the film, according to Vertov.

The Duo 'Garden in Time' will accompany the film with a live performance. Omar Frau and Dimitri Käch are two guitarists with ample experience in setting films to music. Armed with two guitars and various effect devices, they will accompany this milestone of experimental film.
