In the glittering city of the future, the rich enjoy themselves in the leisure gardens of the upper city, while the workers in the underground city are forced to eke out a miserable existence. Until one day Maria leads the ruler's son down to where tensions are running high...

‘The fact that the first feature-length science fiction film in history also raises questions about technology, power and human responsibility explains its enduring relevance. In a present marked by digitalisation, artificial intelligence and new forms of social division, Lang's work serves as a reminder that progress without a human foundation can lead to chaos.’ (Thomas Bahr, Stummfilm-Magazin)

The Rotterdam Kinematic Ensemble, which specialises in live improvised music for silent films, works within the experimental and improvised music scene with variable line-ups. The intense musical improvisation between the musicians and the interaction with the film creates a unique audiovisual experience. The Geneva-based ensemble Batida combines different art forms and is dedicated to high-quality modern and contemporary works. It combines the acoustic power of percussive instruments with the broad sound spectrum of electronic music. In their first collaboration, the two ensembles transform the working class's urge to rise into music.

Following the screening, we invite you to join us for drinks in the foyer.
